Perhaps you’ve wondered how you can make a cake for your dog without having to bake for hours? Or perhaps you already have a LickiMat Wobble and you’d like to do more creative things with it? This football ‘cake’ can be made in nothing more than a couple of hours.

Of course, it’s not really a cake, as it has no sponge base, and no filling. All you are doing is decorating the dome shape of a LickiMat Wobble so that it looks like a celebration cake.

There are so many options for toppings, so you can easily swap out my suggested toppings for anything else that works for your dog.

EQUIPMENT

The only essential piece of equipment to make this football ‘cake’ is the LickiMat Wobble. If you haven’t already got one, once you do, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it!

It’s made from durable, food grade rubber, so it’s perfectly safe for your fur baby. It’s also easy to clean – just pop it in the dishwasher, or scrub it with a brush.

A REALLY VERSATILE LickiMat

Of all the LickiMat models, this is my favourite.

You can simply pour some yogurt or kefir in it, and leave it as a bowl, or turn it inside out and create a fantastic base for many other topping ideas.

INGREDIENTS

You need 3 different colour toppings to make a football cake like this one. I used a cream and brown contrast for the ball, with green grass around it. Of course, you might prefer to use different colours for the ball, or even just one colour – that’s totally up to you!

MAIN COLOUR – CREAM PART OF THE FOOTBALL

  • 1/2 banana, mashed well
  • 2 Tbs Greek yogurt
  • 1.5 Tbs almond flour
  • Mash the ingredients together well to make a paste. It shouldn’t be too runny or it will run off the LickiMat

SECOND COLOUR – BROWN PART OF THE FOOTBALL

  • 1 Tbs Greek yogurt
  • 1 Tbs low fat cream cheese
  • 1 Tbs carob powder – I mixed 1 tsp of ground, dehydrated liver powder with 2 tsp carob, but you might not have dehydrated liver, in which case just use carob. It’s easy to dehydrate liver – see this article.
  • Mix the ingredients together well to make a paste. It shouldn’t be too runny or it will run off the LickiMat

GRASS FROSTING

  • 100gr / 3.5ounces low fat cream cheese
  • 3 tsps spirulina
  • 1 tsp Greek yogurt – add in gradually to get the texture right
  • Mix the cream cheese and spirulina together with a spoon. Gradually add a little yogurt to loosen the mix slightly. It needs to maintain its shape in little peaks. If it’s too runny it won’t look like grass

INSTRUCTIONS

Prepare each of the 3 toppings as outlined in the instructions above.

To get the hexagon shapes, I made a template which I printed and cut out of paper. You could just do this free hand if you prefer.

My hexagon measured 6cm across (2.5″ approx.)

Step 1

Turn your LickiMat Wobble inside out, so that the texture is on the outside.

Step 2

Place it on a plate or tray. Although I used a plate, I would recommend using a flatter plate than mine, unless you want the football to look like it landed on a grassy hill. A flat base means you won’t need as much grass around the base of the football either.

Step 3

Place the plate or tray on top of an upturned saucepan. The reason for this is that it’s much easier to decorate the LickiMat if you can rotate it.

Step 4

Place the hexagon template on the top of the Wobble, right in the centre.

Step 5

Put half the second colour frosting (brown) into the piping bag and cut off the tip to make a small hole (if you’re not using disposable piping bags, you’ll need a fine nozzle, around 4-6mm). Using the piping bag, pipe around the edge of the hexagon template. Don’t worry about being too neat as you will be filling in this shape in the next step. Remove the template and you will be left with the outline of the hexagon.

Step 6

Fill this first hexagon outline with your main colour (cream). I found it easiest to do this with a knife, but you may find that a spatula is easier for you. Smooth over the surface of the topping so it covers the LickiMat’s texture.

Step 7

Place the hexagon template directly below the first hexagon that you made at the top of the Wobble. Using the piping bag, pipe around the edge of the hexagon shape (you won’t need to pipe the top line, as this is the bottom of your first hexagon). Remove the template and you will be left with the outline of another hexagon.

Step 8

Fill this second hexagon outline with your main colour too (cream).

Step 9

Place the template to the right of your second hexagon, lining up the edges of the template so they meet the first and second hexagons. Use the piping bag to outline this third hexagon (you won’t need to pipe the top or left hand side lines, as they are the edges of the hexagons you have already made). Remove the template and you will be left with the outline of another hexagon.

Step 10

Fill this third hexagon with your second colour (brown).

Step 11

Outline another hexagon to the right of the third hexagon. Fill it with your main colour (cream). Continue repeating the hexagons with alternating colours as you work your way around the ball.

Step 12

When you finish the first row, repeat the same process on the next row down.

Steps 9-12

Sometimes it’s easier to use your finger to spread the topping into awkward spots!

Step 13

Once the LickiMat has been covered with topping, it’s time to add the grass. Pop the grass piping nozzle into your piping bag (don’t forget to cut off the tip of the bag if you’re using a disposable bag!). Fill the piping bag with the green frosting. Smooth out any air bubbles – you don’t want big air pockets in the frosting or you’ll find that sometimes the frosting suddenly spits out while you’re working.

If you’ve never used a grass nozzle before, just practise on a flat surface until you get the hang of it. Start squeezing out the frosting just above the surface that you’re decorating and lift up. Stop squeezing once you have the desired length of grass. Scrape up the frosting you used for practice and pop it into the piping bag again. No need to waste it!

Step 14

Begin by adding grass all the way around the base of the football. Turn the plate as you go, so that the plate rotates and you don’t have to move around it. Once you’ve done a row all around the base, add another row. Do as many as you need to cover the plate.
